Hundreds protest ICE detainment of Mahmoud Khalil in Washington Square Park
Hundreds of protesters from Students for Justice in Palestine chapters across New York City joined NYU students in Washington Square Park on Tuesday to condemn the Saturday detainment of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate and leading pro-Palestinian activist. The demonstration started in Garibaldi Plaza with speeches from an NYU professor and student addressing Khalil, who was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement despite being a legal permanent resident. The detainment comes amid President Donald Trump’s threats to deport international students who have engaged in pro-Palestinian protests against Israel’s war in Gaza. “Anyone in the legal profession knows that that kind of arrest is flagrantly illegal and unconstitutional,” said…
NYU not named on Trump’s list of colleges facing antisemitism penalties
NYU was not listed among the 60 universities said to be investigated by the U.S. Department of Education for complaints alleging antisemitic harassment, despite being one of 10 colleges slated for investigation by the Federal Task Force to Combat Antisemitism. The department’s Office for Civil Rights sent letters to each of the 60 colleges two days ago warning them of “potential enforcement actions” if they fail to “fulfill their obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to protect Jewish students on campus.” NYU, George Washington University and University of California, Los Angeles are the only three schools targeted by President Donald Trump’s antisemitism task force that were not…
NYU Shanghai receives record number of applicants for class of 2029
NYU Shanghai received a record-breaking high of nearly 24,000 applications for its class of 2029. The milestone aligns with NYU’s latest overall admissions rate, which also reached a record high with more applications than any other private university in the United States. Each class at NYU Shanghai has approximately 500 available spots, half of which are reserved for domestic students from China and autonomous regions such as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The remaining spots are given to international students, with around 53% from the United States and the rest from 156 other countries. NYU Shanghai’s class of 2027 received just 16,773 applications from 84 different countries. The campus’ class…
Students condemn NYU Langone’s silence on gender-affirming care
Dozens of students and community members rallied in Garibaldi Plaza on Tuesday, demanding that NYU expand its protections for transgender students and address NYU Langone Health’s decision to deny gender-affirming care to at least two patients last month. Students chanted “When trans rights are under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back,” “Don’t comply, don’t give in” and “Protect trans students, let them live.” Organized by NYU’s chapter of the Young Democratic Socialists of America, the rally featured speakers from NYU’s LGBTQ+ Center, NYU’s Queer Union, Gemstones, United Auto Workers and Brown Sugar Brilliance. “It has been weeks since we have sort of heard what is happening to…
NYU appoints Title VI coordinator as Trump cracks down on Columbia
NYU President Linda Mills announced the overdue appointment of the university’s Title VI coordinator on Monday amid the Trump administration’s recent crackdown on Columbia University. David Krieger, who just wrapped up 13 years as a senior attorney for the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, will oversee complaints relating to discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity or religious affiliation. NYU spokesperson John Beckman said in a statement to WSN that Krieger was selected “weeks ago,” and that Monday was his first day working at the university. The role was initially slated for appointment by the end of 2024. During his time at the Department of Education, Krieger…
NYU bars 20-plus law students from Bobst after pro-Palestinian sit-in
NYU has barred nearly 30 law students from entering most university buildings after staging an eight-hour sit-in outside President Linda Mills’ office on Tuesday. The group had sent a letter to Mills that morning, demanding she meet with them to discuss the university’s student conduct policy, its stance on immigration and its investments in companies with ties to Israel amid a fragile ceasefire in Gaza. Members of NYU’s chapter of Law Students for Justice in Palestine congregated on the 12th floor of Bobst Library at around 10 a.m., declaring that they would not leave until they scheduled a meeting with Mills. The students left at about 6 p.m., chanting “shame”…
Nurses call off strike, reach contract with NYU Langone
Nurses at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn called off a potential strike on Friday, initially slated for Saturday, after negotiating a two-year contract with the hospital that secured an immediate raise to employee salaries and the hiring of 100 nurses to address complaints related to understaffing. The contract outlined a 9.25% wage increase that took effect on Saturday and 6% increase set for March 2026, amounting to a 15.8% overall increase in annual salary. Nurses who have worked the same unit and shift for at least 18 months will also receive a one-time retention bonus ranging from $3,750 to $5,250, and the hospital will pay a combined $1 million to the nurses…
NYU Shanghai moves commencement from grand theater to campus lawn
NYU Shanghai’s decision to move its graduation ceremony from a 2,500-seat theater to its campus courtyard has sparked criticism from dozens of students, many of whom are concerned that the new spot won’t be able to accommodate all of the attendees. After it was announced in a campuswide email on Feb. 3, students said the change was unexpected and negligent of community members’ opinions. The school’s commencement ceremony, set for May 25, has previously been held at Bank of Communications New Bund 31 Performing Arts Center — a grand theater about 20 minutes away from NYU Shanghai — and will now take place at the campus’ quad. David Pe, the…
‘It’s amazing’: Cancer cells work together to grow, NYU study finds
A team of 14 researchers at NYU found that cancer cells cooperate with each other in order to survive challenging conditions, contrasting decades of previous research focused on their tendency to compete. In the study published in Nature Medicine last month, researchers observed cancerous cells as they received varying levels of nutritional support. Tumor cells usually compete for amino acids — the building blocks for proteins — as a source of nutrients. However, researchers found that when there are fewer amino acids available, the cells begin to evenly distribute the nutrients instead. “As of now there isn’t any study similar to this one, so this is novel research being published,”…
Trump’s antisemitism task force to investigate NYU
President Donald Trump’s Federal Task Force to Combat Antisemitism will visit NYU as part of its investigation into 10 U.S. universities with reported incidents of antisemitism, the Department of Justice announced Friday. It is unclear when the investigations will take place. Leo Terrell, a leading member of the task force, said the group will compile information on reported instances of antisemitism on college campuses by meeting with “university leadership, impacted students and staff, local law enforcement and community members,” and assess whether “remedial action is warranted.” “We are going to use every tool in our toolbox to stop the harassment of Jewish students,” Terrell, assistant attorney general for civil rights,…
